Learning Activities For Children

Learning Activities for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and elementary school aged children.

In a couple weeks we will be taking a long drive from Utah to Alabama for Christmas this drive wouldn’t be so bad (especially with gas prices lowering!!!) but we have a one year old and a two year old. There is so much information online about travelling activities for older children but not too much for toddlers. Along with toys I have decided to gather up learning activities for the kids. Here are some ideas:

  • Buy a jumbo activity book the Dollar Tree, it will be cheaper than printing off pages online so a letter and shape book for my two year old and a book with animals for my one year old and new crayons along with a bag full of toys, books and snacks should keep them busy for awhile.
  • Finger puppets, I made some monkey puppets for “5 little monkeys jumping on the bed” and “5 little monkeys swinging on the tree”.
  • “What do you see?” - My two year old will enjoy yelling out the colours of cars and trees and other things we see. Or make it more difficult and tell your child to find a red car or find a river.
  • “What Makes That Sound?” My kids love sounds. Saying what says “choo-choo” or “oink-oink” will be fun for them to answer.
  • Bubbles - get some little party favour bottles.
  • Kid Songs CD’s, Classical Music

Have you take long road trips with toddlers? What helped them pass the time?

Peanut Butter And Banana Roll Up

Nov-21-2008 By Melissa

Kids will love helping make this fun and very healthy snack.

First you need:

  • A rolling pin
  • A slice of bread
  • Peanut butter
  •  Slices of a banana

This is how you make it:

  1. With your rolling pin roll the bread so it is very flat and thin
  2. Spread peanut butter on the bread slices
  3. Place as many slices of banana’s as you would like
  4. Roll the bread up like a jelly roll

Get creative. Try adding other fruits or maybe cream cheese and veggies?

1-2-3-4- Give Me Five!

Nov-5-2008 By Melissa

I have to give my two year old credit for coming up with this game. I caught her making up this little game to teach her one year old sister to count - How cute!!!

  • Hold up one finger, have your child hold up one finger, touch fingers and say ‘one’.
  • Hold up two fingers, have child hold up two fingers, touch fingers and say ‘two’.
  • Hold up three fingers, have child hold up three fingers, touch fingers and say ‘three’.
  • Hold up four fingers, have child hold up four fingers, touch fingers and say ‘four’.
  • Hold up five fingers, have child hold up five fingers, say Give Me Five and give each other a high five!

This is such a good use of senses to teach counting. Child will learn by sight, sound and touch.
